Why do I need a Forensic Examination?

The ultimate goal of digital forensics is to perform a structured investigation while clearly documenting the chain of evidence, to find out exactly what happened on the digital device and ultimately who was responsible for it. This helps in both criminal investigations and law disputes.

What is the difference between Forensics and eDiscovery?

Digital forensics and electronic discovery are quite similar and are often confused as being one and the same. The clear difference in the two is that digital forensics focuses on all the data stored on digital devices, while electronic discovery only focus on active data clusters stored on the device.

The technical term for used hard drive space is allocated clusters, and the unused portion is referred to as unallocated clusters. The unallocated clusters on devices are what allow you to download more programs on to your computer or apps on your phone. When you run out of unallocated space, you might delete something in order to free up more space and download something else.

When you delete something from any type of hard drive, small remnants of data will always remain. Even though you may not be able to find, much less decipher the remaining data, experts in the Digital Forensics field are specially trained and use specific tools that allow them to extract this information.

Focus on digital forensics has been placed on electronic crimes, such as child pornography or credit card fraud. However, digital forensics can discover evidence in many different circumstances such as bankruptcies, intellectual property theft, sexual harassment and divorce just to name a few. In the past, most of the communications were done over telephone conversations, but in the current age of digital communication, many people make plans over email, text messaging and online chats. Even when deleted, traces of these conversations can be found through digital forensics.
